Clean Eating- Dog Edition

I’m sharing #NUTRO in my life as part of a NUTRO sponsored series for Socialstars™

I talk an awful lot about my kids and our healthy eating journey but I probably have not talked enough about our third child who happens to be an adorable 8 pound dog named “Lucky.”. We just celebrated Lucky’s 12th birthday last month and can’t believe he is this old already! When we got him 12 years ago he was just 1 pound and he was the sweetest, quietest little thing in the world.

Funny story about how we came to own him- 12 years ago I was in high school and working at a beauty supply store when one day a co-worker came in with an adorable little fuzzy puppy saying that a lady was giving them away. Of course I had to have one for myself, mind you I was in high school and living at my parents still, so I went and picked up the runt of the litter. I told my parents an elaborate story of finding him outside of the beauty supply store and saving him so, of course they were willing to let me keep him, thus how he became named “Lucky”. My parents eventually found out the truth but were already attached to Lucky so he was here to stay. Now, 12 years later and he is one spoiled, loved dog now living with my family and getting plenty of attention from our two little boys.

Throughout the years Lucky has had numerous skin issues with no real cause ever determined. It was suggested to us that he probably has food sensitivities and that a simple, limited ingredient diet would be best for him, so for years now he has been eating just that. It wasn’t until a few years ago when food allergies entered into our parenting life that we started paying attention to GMO free foods for ourselves and children. Naturally this made us curious what exactly we were feeding our dog and sure enough although his diet was limited ingredient, it had not been GMO free. We were so excited when we discovered the NUTRO™ brand of dog food; they are a trustworthy brand that only sources non-GMO† ingredients and never add in artificial preservatives, flavors or colors. In their Limited Ingredient Diet recipes, they also do not use ingredients like chicken by-product, corn, wheat or soy protein. Their food is sourced from trusted farmers and suppliers and is tested to be sure of its high quality and safety. Their philosophy is NUTRO.FEED .CLEAN™. We feel so much better now that we have thoroughly researched the dog food options and have chosen NUTRO. †Trace amounts of genetically modified material may be present due to potential cross contact during manufacturing.

You might be wondering, but what if my dog does not have any skin conditions- should I still feed them a limited ingredient diet? The answer is yes!. NUTRO™ replaces unnecessary ingredients and as mentioned above only uses real foods, nutrients and vitamins. We’ve seen the damage that fake foods do to humans, can you imagine what it has done to our poor animals? I love knowing that we are providing our dog with great nutrition. In terms of cost it is a bit more each month but it could literally save thousands of dollars in vet bills over a dog’s life, so it is well worth it!

Since feeding our dog the NUTRO™ Limited Ingredient Diet Adult Dry Dog Food Venison Meal & Sweet Potato Recipe we have noticed a positive change in his skin. He used to constantly scratch himself and would end up with bald spots, that seems to have gotten better. The real challenge is trying to prevent him from eating all of the food scraps that inevitably fall onto the floor at each meal from the kids!
