5 Earth Day Activities with Kids

Earth Day 2018 is quickly approaching, and we’ve rounded up 5 of the best activities you can do to celebrate with your kids. Our children are the future caretakers of Mother Earth and it’s never too early to show them how to properly care for it; from reuse, reduce and recycling to cleaning up after others. There are so many fun activities to do together with your little ones. Here are 5 suggested activities:

 1. Start a Compost
Whether you start a compost on a large or small scale, the whole family can get and stay involved with this project. You might be wondering what compost is, it’s simply the breakdown of organic materials that create a nutrient rich soil like material that can then be put in your garden or trees and plants to help them grow. You can purchase a small-scale kitchen compost containers or you can DIY or purchase a large outdoor one.

2. Start a Recycling Bin
If you don’t already have a recycling bin at your home or school, Earth Day is the perfect day to begin doing so. This is a fun way to get kids involved with recycling and educate them about using products that are in ecofriendly packaging, like the Stonyfield® Organic Kids® multipack yogurt which are actually made from plants! Because they are made from plants they have a lower carbon footprint than petroleum-based cups and are much better for the environment.

3. Plant Trees
This is probably the most notable way to celebrate Earth Day and it’s another great way to get the kids involved. You can usually pick up free seedlings from your local county government building, but if not, you can purchase some at any nursery or even a large home improvement store.

4. Make a Butterfly Garden
This is a fun and creative way to celebrate Earth Day. Using flower seeds native to your area you can create a butterfly garden of any size on your property. You can keep it simple and plant in flower pots or you can arrange a dirt area on your property and plant directly in the ground. You can even use the Stonyfield® Organic Kids® yogurt multipack cups to plant your seeds in! Since they are made for plant-based material, they make the perfect seed starters.

5. Clean up your local Nature Trail
This is a great way to get outside and do some good. Bring along buckets and garbage bags to collect trash along the trails. Not only does this teach children about respecting Earth by not littering, but it gives everyone a little nature walk. My kids really enjoyed cleaning up and were excited to see who could collect more trash in their buckets.

We made it into an all morning event with a snack break, you can choose to keep it short or spend all day cleaning up. Whichever you decide we suggest bringing along the #1 organic kids yogurt brand, Stonyfield® Organic Kids® which we mentioned above. For 35 + years, they have been a trusted yogurt brand free of GMO’s. Last year, Stonyfield® announced a sugar reduction across its yogurt portfolio – and it started with Stonyfield® Organic Kids®, featuring between 25% – 40% less sugar than the leading kids’ yogurt

Because they are certified organic and Non-GMO project verified I’m comfortable in knowing they are free of toxic pesticides, artificial hormones, antibiotics and GMO’s. Although this post is sponsored by them, we have been eating their products since our kids could have yogurt. We love the flavors and packaging options they offer such as the pouches which are easy to stick in lunch boxes. You can even freeze them for a refreshing lunchtime treat.
