Potty Training in a Day!

Potty Training in One Day!

Yup, you read that right… it took us 1 day to potty train our 2 (almost 3 year old) boy!  A little back story before I get into the details-  When our son was 1 year and 9 months or so, he all of a sudden had a huge interest in going to the potty (he was an early talker so he was able to communicate this to us easily) and for about a week things were going well.  We would ask him if he wanted to go potty and he usually would.  Of course there were plenty of accidents back at that time, but I was so shocked that he was actually ‘ready’ to be potty trained at such an early age.  Well, that lasted for about a week and after that he showed absolutely zero interest in continuing to potty train.  Being that he was so young I decided not to push it.

Fast forward to this past summer when he was 2 years and 10 months old, preschool was just a few weeks away and I was getting really nervous that he had expressed no interest in potty training, so I decided one day in August we would just go diaper less and see what happens.  The first day he cried “I want my diaper” all day long and held in his pee almost the entire day, but that evening he started laughing hysterically when we were outside and boom- peed all over the patio.  It’s what he needed to do to figure out that it was okay to pee without a diaper.  He was so proud, even though it happened on our back patio (no biggie!)  we made a huge deal of it and gave him lots of praise.  From that “accident” forward he’s been potty trained! He was old enough to grasp that this was the next step in being a big boy and it was just really easy from there on out.  I can count on one hand the amount of accidents he’s had in the past 3 months that he’s been potty trained.  Honestly, as you can see no big secrets here  I think it was just the perfect timing for him.  My potty training advice would be not to rush it, kids will do things when they are developmentally ready with your guidance.  Also, let your kids explore the bathroom so they won’t be afraid of the potty when the time comes.  Our son has an obsession with unraveling the toilet paper roll(don’t most though?!), so when I would go in to find him doing that I always reminded him that when he was ready to go on the potty he would be able to use the toilet paper.  Right now you can get our favorite toilet paper -Charmin Ultra Soft- at Sam’s Club for a limited time and there are 1,000 free extra sheets per pack, that’s a lot of unraveling fun for your toddler 😉  side note: I bought a Sam’s Club membership on Groupon over the summer and was able to end up getting it for free after signing up as a new customer on group on ($10 rebate) then Sam’s Club was offering a $20 gift card as part of the groupon.  So, be on the lookout for those kinds of deals if you aren’t already a Sam’s Club member!
