Diaper rash usually affects all babies at some point in their lives. It’s unpleasant for them but luckily it can usually be resolved quickly. I’ve put together 5 easy and effective ways to avoid diaper rash.

1. Change baby’s diaper often.
Leaving a wet diaper up against baby’s sensitive skin is the main cause of diaper rash, so it’s important to change their diaper often to avoid having a rash start.

2. Check diet.
Diet and food allergies are a main cause of GI issues in little ones so it’s important to look further into a possible food allergy if your baby gets frequent diaper rashes. Often the diaper rashes can be quickly resolved by cutting certain foods out of their diet and yours if you’re breastfeeding.

3. Breastmilk!
Breastmilk is amazing for so many reasons and one added bonus of breastfeeding is that it makes for a great treatment for diaper rashes. Express a little milk and put it on the rash, be sure to let it air dry before applying anything else (see next steps) and putting the diaper back on.

4. Diaper free time.
This can be difficult to do for obvious reasons but try to find a way to give your little one a bit of diaper-free time. If it’s warm enough outside just head outdoors and make it easy on yourself! If you’re stuck inside try spending a little time in just one room and use an old bed sheet on the floor if needed. The diaper rash needs time to air dry and heal so the more diaper-free time they have, the faster it can heal.

5.Use a barrier cream.
Diaper cream is a very useful tool in taking care of diaper rashes. We’ve tried several different brands and we’ve found that DESITIN® is the most helpful. Some other diaper creams we’ve used have actually made the rash worse. DESITIN® offers several types of barrier creams and to help you sort out which one you need i’ll list them here.

DESITIN® maximum strength original paste
This is our go to cream, it provides the maximum level of rash fighting ingredients and works quickly to soothe and heal the rash by providing a protective barrier immediately upon contact with skin. It is hypoallergenic and pediatrician tested.

DESITIN® rapid relief cream
This cream is great because it works quickly to provide relief for your little one’s rash. It is gentle enough that you can continue to use it after the diaper rash has cleared up to help prevent further rashes.

DESITIN® multi-purpose ointment
If you’re looking for a clear protective ointment, this is the one! Besides protecting against diaper rash you can use this ointment for protecting and treating minor skin irritations. It’s also great for dry and chapped skin and is enriched with vitamins A & D.
